A non-profit founded for educational and charitable purposes. TO DEVELOP AN ARTIST’S COMMUNITY & FOSTER INTEREST IN VISUAL ARTS BY ENCOURAGING AREA ARTISTS AND THE COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION, EXHIBITIONS, AND EXPLORATION OF THE ARTS. (since 1996)
Members met monthly on the third Thursday, often at KSB off of Brewer ROad. The Board meets monthly on the second Thursday. Members join for several reasons- to participate in our shows and Open Studio, to talk with other member artists and to hear presentations given at the meetings.
Our S.V.A.C. ANNUAL EVENTS are
#1- The Fall Show has been produced for 15 years and counting. The fall show has traditionally had a theme. This year's theme is "Illusion". Last year's theme was "Beneath the Surface". Generally 80 artists enter a work each which is hung in a gallery at Talaquepaque and stays up for 2 - 3 weeks, and receives roughly 30 visitors a day. The show is unjuried.
#2- Open Studios. For a weekend in early May, participating artists have their studios open to the public. A map is published, publicity goes out 6 weeks prior. Participating artists each serve on some committee to raise money, produce publicity, printings, the map, signage etc.
#3- A juried show in January or February. A curator is selected to jury the show, preferably one from outside town who may judge the work solely on its own merits. Although a juried show does not need a theme, people locally like a theme so one is selected. Up to 4 works are selected from each participating artist. There is a size restriction.
#4- Presentations are given at 8 of the monthly meetings. Presentations are given by professionals, usually local, and in response to member requests. Generally presentations use power point or demonstrations.
#5- Members Show & Tell happens at two or three annual meetings. Members are invited (by board members) to present in a short (4 minute) time slot.
#6- The Holiday Party. For some the best part of membership is getting together with other local art persons and dancing, eating and celebrating our community.
